  • Welcome to the online resources for HDR students

Welcome to the UNE online Resources specifically focused to enhance your HDR experience and to provide a collegial sharing of ideas across different disciplines. You will also find the UNE Goldbook here which outlines the polices and procedures for HDR studies. It is highly recommended that you keep a copy of this document for referral during key stages of your candidature.

Please contact me if you would like to discuss any matter regarding your candidature in The Faculty of The Professions, or would like to contribute towards building this online resource.

  • Postgraduate Conferences:

The Faculty of The Professions and The Faculty of Arts and Sciences both run a postgraduate conference for all HDR candidates. The FOTP is held in July. These are excellent opportunities for networking with other HDR colleagues in your faculty, attending workshops in specialised computer software, and to receive supportive and critical feedback for your research.

The Schools in The Faculty of Arts and Sciences hold their HDR conferences at different times throughout the year. (You will need to contact your School HDR Coordinator for details).

    NDLTD UNION CATALOG

A collaborative effort of the NDLTD, OCLC, VTLS, and Scirus, the NDLTD Union Catalog contains more than one million records of electronic theses and dissertations. For students and researchers, the Union Catalog makes individual collections of NDLTD member institutions and consortia appear as one seamless digital library of ETDs. The NDLTD provides free resources to contribute your institution's metadata - click to learn more about the Union Catalog project.

    SEARCH and BROWSE ETDs

Two tools have been developed specifically to search and browse the NDLTD Union Catalog. Other valuable tools have been developed for searches focused on specific countries or regions. Select the tool below that meets your needs.

Search tools developed for the NDLTD Union Catalog

    Scirus ETD Search
A comprehensive scientific research tool from Elsevier, Scirus ETD Search provides an advanced search that can narrow results to theses and dissertations as well as provide access to related scholarly resources.

    VTLS Visualizer
This is a dynamic search and discovery platform with sophisticated functionality. You can sort by relevance, title, and date. In the current implementation, faceted searches are available by language, continent, country, date, format and source institution. Additional facets, such as subjects or departments, can be added if desired.
  • Navigating the first 12 months

    Navigation

This resource focuses on the planning and scheduling for early stage doctoral candidates. The discussion centres around the development of a sound proposal, engaging with the literature and preparing for confirmation. Associate Professors Terrence Hays and Rafat Hussain discuss mapping the time frame of study and the significant outcomes you should be aiming to achieve within each year of candidature. The resource also looks
at ways of critical engagement in terms of preparing a literature review, and preparing a quality presentation for confirmation.

There is also an excellent resource from Monash University in Melbourne with sound ideas for writing and developing a research proposal.

  • Confirmation of candidature

Confirmation of Candidature is the most significant milestone in the first year of your PhD candidature.

Its purpose is to determine whether or not work to date on the PhD research project indicates a strong likelihood that it will result in a high quality thesis, completed in the required time. If any major gaps or problems in your research project are found there is still time to rectify them.
Although it is of benefit to your project and candidature, the confirmation of candidature process can be challenging and sometimes stressful.

For many students it provides their first opportunity to formally present their research proposal to peers, colleagues and superiors. It may also be the first time you obtain critical feedback on your work. The attached links provide you with detailed information for preparing and presenting your confirmation seminar.

  • Qualitative Journeys: Student and Mentor Experiences With Research

Book edited by Professor Victor Minichiello (PVC Dean of The Faculty of The Professions, and Professor Jeffrey A. Kottler (Professor of Counseling at Californian State University and Adjunct Professor in the School of Health)

Qualitative Journeys: Student and Mentor Experiences with Research

    Sage Publications Los Angeles 2009

    Law Library: Call number 001.42/Q11

This book takes a fresh approach to teaching qualitative research. Authors Victor Minichiello and Jeffrey Kottler share stories of student qualitative research experiences that reveal the struggles, the joys, the discoveries, and the surprises that take place during the qualitative research journey. By studying examples of student research (including obstacles and how they were overcome), readers learn through the real-life experiences of other students. Throughout the textbook, the authors offer pragmatic guidance for what works and what does not work, along with suggested solutions.

    Focus of the book:

    • Provides the nuts and bolts of qualitative research in Part I
    • Includes a dozen "qualitative journeys, narratives that tell the story of research studies, how they evolved, what was involved, and how they were conceived and conducted
    • Focuses on research from the perspective of student experiences and demonstrates the partnership between students and their mentors
    • Includes domestic and international examples of qualitative studies and real-life stories that convey the excitement and meaning of research
    • Considers the lessons learned and the main themes derived from all the qualitative journeys

Qualitative Journeys: Student and Mentor Experiences with Research is appropriate for use as a supplement or core text for courses in Qualitative Research, Counseling Research Methods, or Social Work Research Methods.

  • Understanding Theoretical Frameworks in Qualitative Research

    Theoretical Frameworks in Qualitative Research

"This is a book I can use to improve my research, to help students put their inquiries in perspective relative to their own working theories while considering other relevant theories, and to support my critical reading and interpretation of the work of other inquirers."
--David D. Williams, Brigham Young University

In Theoretical Frameworks in Qualitative Research, the authors provide extensive and practical coverage of theory and its role in qualitative research, a review of the literature that currently exists on theoretical frameworks, a clear and concise definition of what a theoretical framework is and how one goes about finding one, and real-world examples of theoretical frameworks effectively employed by some of the world's leading qualitative researchers. The book will be invaluable to students and researchers who want to find detailed examples of their design options and who are still working through the various frameworks they could employ. The interdisciplinary nature of the framework examples used in the book (economics, politics, social theory, etc.) will also assist students in linking their own specific research questions to larger inquiry projects.

    Key Features:

    • Comprehensive coverage of the role of theory in qualitative research
    • Presentation of a wide variety of distinctive, sometimes unusual theoretical frameworks drawn from a number of disciplines
    • Real-world examples detailed and explained by some of today's leading qualitative researchers
    • Guidance for students on how to integrate the complexities of their frameworks into a solid research design
    • Understanding copyright

Copyright is automatic protection of your creative work. It is a balance between rights of creators as copyright owners, and the public as copyright users. It Is intended to encourage creativity and allow creators to profit from their work. This forum provides you with information about copyright concerning research in Australia.
